The Potential Horror of Using a Body Fat Weight Scale

September 18th, 2008

Many people inevitably fear what they may find out by using a body fat weight scale. The information discovered by measuring body fat is usually seen as a prime indicator as to how out of shape a particular individual is and how seemingly unattractive he or she is to the majority of society. Nonetheless, the use of a body fat scale and other body fat indicators can be integral when it comes to getting to the bottom of your health or weight problems.

If a person wants an accurate assessment of body fat weight, it’s important to set aside the fear of embarrassment and the concerns about being attractive. The primary objective of using a body fat scale is to assess a person’s overall health and fitness, not to pass judgment on how that person looks. How society views a person physically is irrelevant if that person is in poor health or debilitated from weight-related issues.

Now that we have that out of the way, it’s time to learn a little bit about your body fat index. It is important to realize that losing body fat is more important than how much you way. That is because your weight could be comprised of healthy muscle and other tissues that typically aren’t detrimental to your health. Your body fat is problematic for your overall good health, however, and that is why the use of a body fat weight scale is important.

Many people neglect their body fat index entirely when it comes to losing weight. Let’s say, for example, that a man wants to lose twenty pounds. If he didn’t know his body fat percentage as based on the findings of his doctor, he would probably go about his weight loss the wrong way. Lean body mass is usually the largest part of one’s body mass. Lean body mass essentially refers to organs, skin and other parts of your body that pose no health risk.

In determining your body fat index, your medical doctor will look at your lean body mass and will factor in your initial body fat. This will help you formulate some realistic goals. A body fat scale may be used to make this equation properly. It is recommended that you visit your doctor for more information, but you can also purchase home items that can measure your body fat index. They work like a bathroom scale, in most cases, and can be purchased at many health stores.

Once you have learned about your initial body fat through the use of a body fat scale and have an accurate body fat measurement, you can start to do something about what you know. You may find that you are actually very comfortable with your level of body fat or that changes can be easily implemented in your lifestyle. Always get a second opinion, however, and talk to your doctor about his or her opinion when it comes to your health.

do you lose weight when you lose body fat?

November 28th, 2008

6-7 months ago i started eating really healthier, i mean a lot, and exercising more. I'm trying to lose a couple of pounds

the weird thing is, i haven't lost any weight, but i look like i have. i look thinner, or leaner.

could i have lost body fat, and not weight?
or when you lose body fat do you lose weight or see a difference in scale numbers?

It's quite possible to lose fat without losing weight. Muscle is denser than fat, so if you replace 10 pounds of fat with 10 pounds of muscle, you will look much leaner.

The next thing airlines will start charging by the weight and body fat of the passengers.?

November 26th, 2008

Yes, take your shoes and socks off. Step on our "United Airlines" scale. Five pounds will be added to your weight if you have a bag of potato chips and a can of sugar water. Welcome, to the Friendly Skies!

If you are serious about weighing 600 plus pounds, you have got to get a hold on that. The body was just not designed to handle that type of weight.

Some airlines already require larger passengers to pay for 2 seats if they cannot fit easily into one.A few years ago they complained that the average weight of passengers is higher today then is was in days gone by. With the rampant size discrimination, I could see this happening.

By the way, does that mean skinny people get a discount???

Body fat % on a scale flucuates?

November 24th, 2008

I have a scale that measures body fate and water percentage. In the morning my water is always around 38% and fat percent is around 45% ( Yes I am over weight, but I am loosing it with proper diet and exercise.) anway I will weigh my self at night and my water goes up to around 41% and body fat goes down to around 41-42%. My body weight fluctuates 1-2 lbs also but i know that is ok. Which do you think is more accurate? I think the one at night might be more accurate only because we tend to be dehydrated in the morning. I would love to see your thoughts. Thanks!

You've hit on a good point in the fact that the impedence scales are pretty inaccurate when it comes to bodyfat percentage testing. The problem is that the electrical current used will always find the shortest way to ground, and because of this the varying levels of water in the body and the fact that it doesn't always take a good cross section of body composition makes these scales fluctuate. Bodyfat percentage will not in reality fluctuate like this and is fairly slow to add on to and reduce, that's just physiology, so that should tell you right there how well these scales work.

Your best bet if you're truly interested to know your bodyfat percentage is to get a pair of hand calipers, they're pretty cheap and a lot more accurate. Here is a site that shows you how to measure it properly (note the different sections for men and women):

It's great that you're focusing your progression on bodyfat percentage rather than just plain scale weight. Knowing the body's composition is the first step toward true good health.

According to my body fat scale, mine is going up…..why??

23yr old male here…..
I baught a new scale with a body fat analyizer in it 2 months ago when I started to work out. My first reading said that I weighed 236lbs and 30% body fat (so I was very overweight) Since then I have hit the gym 4-5x a week for 30-40 minutes of cardio and a good weight lifting workout. My strength gains have been significant and my body is looking better and am down 2 inches in my pants waist( i still have a bit to go) Last ngiht I did my bi-weekly weigh in and my weight was 213lbs, but my body fat registered at 31.7%!! I am totally confused, is my scale wrong or did I really incread e my body fat, i dont see how that is possible… My diet is improved as well… 23yr old male here

Hi,
There are many factors which can affect the readings on the scale. I have found that if I am dehydrated then the body fat percentage goes up. You should be real encouraged about losing the inches off of the waist! It definately sounds like you are making good progress. Here is a link that can help explain things:

Is it common to gain body fat, but lose weight on the scale?

November 20th, 2008

I have lost 30 pounds. I have had my body fat checked several times and it has gone up maybe 3% even though I lost weight. Any suggestions on why? I do plan to switch to more weight lifting to build more muscle.
First two times i was measured by a system that tells you by soundwave. They put it on my upper arm. My reading was 18% fat at 204. The second time was 20% using soundwaves.. now I'm 201 and they had this machine that you stand on and it read 23% body fat. I'm a little peeved.

I lost the majority of weight in about 6 months. I worked with a nutritionist and worked out a lot! even two hours at a time early in the process.

No it is not common, but it is possible; so perhaps it happened to you.

What methods are being used to check your body fat? Sometimes they are up to 5% off.

How fast did you lose weight? The faster you do it, the more likely it is to lose muscle, which can make your percent body fat go up.

I'm glad you intend to do weight lifting. It's great for your muscles, great for your metabolism (to burn fat later), and it builds character. See my source for some good info on how to approach weightlifting strategically.
